Scroll down to seen weekly news from this week!! October 5th
September 7, 2012 Wow! The first two days of school are complete. We have had a good couple of days and the children are doing great. My kindergarteners have transitioned well into the big school. This week we focused on learning routine and rules. We read the Kissing Hand and talked about how we felt on the first day of school. With Mrs. Peduzzi's class we read Pete the Cat and colored a picture of Pete. Each week we will do an activity together. Open House is September 11th at 6:30. The PTA meeting is at 6. I encourage everyone to attend. The children may come with you. They are excited about showing off their classroom. On Monday, Breakfast will begin. I have the children eat breakfast in the classroom instead of the cafeteria. It is less chaotic and seems to be a quieter way to start the day. If you want your child to eat school breakfast please let me know. You may also send in a simple breakfast for your child to eat while the others are eating the school breakfast. If you have free lunch there is no additional charge for breakfast. The full price for breakfast is $1.25. Parents can also put money on their child's account for breakfast and for milk and ice cream. Sharing will begin on Monday. Attached is a schedule in case you need a new one. Each child has a day on which they may bring something to share at morning meeting. Please do not send in any toys! Good things to share are books, puzzles, stuffed animals, pencils, trinkets or a story. We will also have a bus drill on Monday. The children will learn how to be safe on the school bus and practice getting off the bus should there be an emergency. Next week we will also begin our reading and math program. The reading program is called Journeys and the math program is called Envisions. More information will follow.
Reminders: - some children still need an extra set of clothes, a smock and a water bottle. - wear sneakers especially on PE days -the weather is changing and we go outside everyday weather permitting. If it is cool send in a sweater or sweatshirt. - send in pink/blue emergency papers ASAP! -OPEN HOUSE TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 11. PTA MEETING AT 6:00 and OPEN HOUSE AT 6:30 Thank you for all of the school supplies! Have a great weekend!

Congratulations!! We have made it through a full week of school!! The children are working hard at learning the rules and routines of school. I am very proud of them. Thank you to everyone who came to open house on the 11th. If you were unable to come and would like to meet with me or see child's classroom let me know. This week we began our math and reading units. During math we have been focusing on the numbers 1-5 (counting and writing). We have also been talking about shapes. During calendar time we have been making an abab pattern. Our reading this week has been focusing on rhyming, reviewing the letters A-Z. We have been reading poetry with rhyming words in it and identifying the words that rhyme. Every morning when the children arrive they will draw and eventually write in their journals. This week we talked about what we could draw, adding details and making our picture look nice. The adults in the room then help the children write a sentence about their picture. On Monday we will begin reading groups and I will be sending home books for you to read with your child. Please return them the next day! With Mrs. Peduzzi's class this week we made a name chart. Each child got to put their name up under the letter it starts with. It was fun to see which letter was the most popular. The chart is up in our classroom for everyone to see and so that we can learn to read/ recognize all of our friends names. We had a couple of fire drills this week and will continue to have them. The children are doing a great job at listening, lining up and leaving the building. Fire/police/emergency vehicles are a big hit in our room. If you should stumble across any books pertaining to these topics and you want to get rid of them I will take them. Pet the Cat is a big it also. We have read three Pete the Cat books numerous times, made a Pete the Cat and are anxiously awaiting the Christmas Pet the Cat book that comes out soon. We also read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and talked about the differences between letters and numbers. Friday Letter Journals come home today. Please talk with your child about what they drew in their journals and send them back on Monday. If you would like to write a little note back to your child you are more than welcome too. A therapy schedule should be coming home soon. It is done I am just waiting for my copy to be given to me. Speech, OT, PT and counseling have started this week! If you should have any questions about the services your child gets or want to meet the therapist(s) seeing your child I can help you contact them
Have a wonderful weekend!!!

Brown Bear Brown Bear; Panda Bear Panda Bear; Baby BearBaby Bear. These are three books that we read this week by Bill Martin and Eric Carle. The children enjoyed retelling and sequencing each one. We also learned about color words while reading them. In our Journeys program we read Buildingwith Dad and learned about big words such as construction sites, bulldozers, mechanics, and cranes. The children loved making their own bulldozer. We have also been talking about nouns- using all the important people in our school. The children are learning that names of people begin with capital or big letters. We have also been talking about families and how each family can be different. The children drew a picture about something fun they do with their family. The adults in the classroom thenhelped to write a sentence about the picture. We will be adding this book to our class library. Our sight word this week is I. We read I Like Me by Kevin Hienkes and completed the following sentence. I like___________. Each child was able to draw and share something that they like. Every morning we have journal writing time. We are working really hard at drawing people, trees, houses with some detail in each picture. Our math this week has focused on the numbers 1-5. We have practiced counting groups of objects up to five and writing the numbers correctly. We have also continued working on shapes. With Mrs. Peduzzi's class we made a graph about how we each get to school. Do we take a bus, walk or come in a car? Ask your child which group won? Have a wonderful weekend!! Mrs. Muller

Happy Columbus Day! Just a reminder no school on Monday October 8th. This week we learned about community helpers and their jobs. We read Everybody Works and learned about all the different jobs people have. Our letter this week was Mm. We read Mimi Mouse and found all of the Mm's in the poem. Our sight word list is growing - we now have the words I, like, the, and the word and on our list. I encourage you to help your child learn these words. Kindergartners have a list of 40 sight words that they need to learn this year. Each week we will keep adding to our list. We are talking about rhyming words, beginning sounds and the number of words in short simple sentences. Our favorite stories this week have been the Marley books. The books are about a crazy dog and his funny adventures.
During math this week we talked about 1 and 2 more and 1 and 2 fewer when comparing groups of objects. Our math vocabulary for this week was more than, less than, same as, column and row. The children were also able to sort m and m's by color, count them and write the number they had of each color. The children are also continuing to learn about shapes and patterns. We read a book called BugPatterns where the children predicted what would come next in a given pattern. The children are working hard at writing the number 0-5. We will continue working on these and will be adding the numbers 6-10.
During journal time the children draw a picture about whatever they choose. The adults in the classroom then help to write a word our sentence that goes with that picture. Our goal next week will be to work on our drawing skills. We will practice making a house, person, tree, flower, boat, car etc. We will talk about adding some detail and then using crayons to color in their picture. Please encourage your child to draw at home, color and perhaps cut out their picture. Thanks for all of your help!
Reminders:
NEXT WEEK IS FIRE SAFETY WEEK! The fireman will be here on Friday!
It is supposed to be cooler next week! We will be going out so make sure your child has a jacket or sweatshirt.
